What Does a Bitcoin Node Actually Do?

A Bitcoin node is a computer running Bitcoin software that independently checks the network for itself. It verifies transactions and blocks against Bitcoin's rules, rejects anything that breaks those rules, and can give your wallet information about the network without relying on someone else's server.
In short: miners propose blocks. Nodes verify them. A node lets you check Bitcoin for yourself instead of taking someone else's word for it.
If you spend enough time around Bitcoin, eventually someone will tell you to “run a node.” It sounds technical, maybe even a little intimidating. What exactly is this box supposed to be doing?
At its simplest, a Bitcoin node is a computer running Bitcoin software that independently checks that the rules of Bitcoin are being followed. A node doesn't have to trust a bank, a company, a miner, or even another Bitcoin user to tell it what is valid. It checks for itself.
Think of a node as a rule checker
Bitcoin doesn't have a central authority deciding which transactions count or how many bitcoin exist. Instead, thousands of independently operated nodes use the same set of rules to determine what they will accept.
Those rules include things like whether a transaction has a valid signature, whether someone is trying to spend bitcoin they don't have, whether the same bitcoin is being spent twice, whether a block follows Bitcoin's consensus rules, and whether new bitcoin is being created according to the protocol's issuance schedule.
When a node receives new transactions and blocks from other computers on the Bitcoin network, it checks them against those rules. If something is valid, the node can accept it and relay it to other nodes. If it breaks the rules, the node rejects it. Your node simply refuses to recognize something that doesn't follow the rules it is configured to enforce.
Does a node store the blockchain?
A full node typically downloads and verifies Bitcoin's blockchain, beginning with its earliest blocks and continuing through the present. As the node processes Bitcoin's history, it independently checks that the blocks and transactions it accepts follow Bitcoin's rules. This allows the node to build its own view of the valid blockchain instead of simply asking someone else which version is correct.
Some nodes keep the entire blockchain stored. Others use a method called pruning, which allows them to discard much of the older block data after verifying it. Either way, verification is what makes a node a node.
Nodes and miners are not the same thing
This is one of the easiest parts of Bitcoin to mix up. Miners create candidate blocks. Nodes verify them.
Miners gather transactions, compete through proof of work and attempt to produce the next valid block. Once a miner produces a block, nodes independently check it. If the block violates the rules those nodes enforce, they reject it.
Imagine a miner tried to create an invalid amount of new bitcoin for itself. Producing the block wouldn't make those coins valid. Nodes following Bitcoin's rules would reject the block. Miners therefore have an incentive to produce blocks that the network's nodes will actually accept.
What does your wallet have to do with your node?
This is where running your own node becomes personally useful. Your Bitcoin wallet needs information about the Bitcoin network. It needs to know which transactions have been confirmed, which bitcoin belong to your wallet and what the current state of the blockchain is. If your wallet isn't connected to a node you control, it generally has to get that information from someone else's infrastructure. That means you're asking another party, in one form or another, “What does the Bitcoin network say?” Running your own node allows compatible wallet software to ask your node instead. You're verifying the information yourself rather than relying entirely on someone else to provide it.
This can also improve privacy. When you depend on someone else's server to look up information related to your wallet, that service may be able to learn information about the addresses or transactions you're interested in. Using your own node can reduce how much of that information you need to reveal to outside services, although running a node alone does not make your Bitcoin activity completely private.
Does running a node earn you Bitcoin?
A normal Bitcoin node doesn't earn bitcoin simply for running. It isn't mining, and there's no automatic reward for helping relay transactions or blocks. The benefit is verification. You gain the ability to independently determine whether the Bitcoin you receive follows the rules you expect Bitcoin to follow. That's where the phrase you've probably heard before comes in: “Don't trust. Verify.” Running a node turns that idea from a slogan into something your computer is actually doing.
Do you need to run a node to use Bitcoin?
You can buy, receive, hold and send bitcoin without operating your own node. Plenty of people begin using Bitcoin long before they ever consider running one. A node becomes more useful as you move toward greater self sovereignty.
You might start by buying bitcoin on an exchange. Later, you learn about self custody and move it to a wallet where you control the keys. Eventually, you may decide that you don't want to rely on someone else's node to tell your wallet what is happening on the network.
The bigger picture
A Bitcoin node is powerful because it doesn't have to trust anyone else to control it. Each node independently decides what it considers valid according to the rules it runs. Nodes communicate with one another, sharing transactions and blocks across a peer to peer network without requiring a central server to coordinate everything.
That's part of what makes Bitcoin different from the financial systems most of us are used to. You don't need permission to join the network or leave, and you don't need to take someone else's word for what happened. You can check for yourself. And that is what a Bitcoin node actually does.
